A full-day professional development event exploring effective collaboration with interpreters and strategies for managing challenging interpreting situations, with a focus on tribunal settings (TASCAT) and real-world interpreting practice. The session brings together interpreters, service coordinators, and tribunal staff to enhance communication quality, role clarity, and system effectiveness.

This AUSIT Professional Development event provides a comprehensive exploration of working effectively with interpreters across institutional and high-pressure environments.

The morning session focuses on the TASCAT context and interpreter service operations, including interpreter booking processes, briefing and debriefing practices, interpreting modalities (face-to-face, telephone, and video), role clarity, and maintaining accuracy in complex interactions. It also includes an overview of the Statewide Interpreter Booking Service (SIBS), current operational challenges, and service improvement initiatives, followed by a Q&A session addressing real-life tribunal scenarios.

After lunch, the afternoon session shifts to the interpreter practice perspective, focusing on managing difficult interpreting situations. Topics include handling distressed or incoherent speakers, navigating ethical dilemmas (accuracy versus appropriateness), and applying strategies for interruption, clarification, and maintaining professional boundaries. Interactive case discussions and participant Q&A provide opportunities for practical reflection and shared learning.

The event concludes with key takeaways and closing remarks, reinforcing best practice approaches to interpreter-mediated communication and service delivery.

Attendees are strongly encouraged to use public transport or plan ahead for street parking availability to ensure timely arrival.
