Curious about where a degree in translation and interpreting can take you? Wondering how others navigated their transition from student to working professional? Join us for an interactive conversation with two guest speakers who’ve taken different but equally inspiring paths!

What's on?

A Panel Discussion with Wenyue Ouyang and Ying Dong

In this session, we’ll bring together two voices from the language industry:

  • Wenyue Ouyang: A NAATI Certified Translator with seven years of experience across game localisation, medical, legal, and business fields. Wenyue will share how she built her freelance career, engaged with professional associations like AUSIT, and developed her role as a mentor.

  • Ying Dong: A freelance interpreter and part-time Associate Lecturer and Research Assistant at UNSW. Ying will reflect on how her interpreting studies have opened up opportunities not just in interpreting, but also in teaching, research, and student support.

Wenyue and Ying will share their career stories, personal insights, and reflections on life after T&I studies — with plenty of time for your questions!

Q&A and Open Discussion: Bring your questions! The second half of the session will be open for audience Q&A and informal discussion.

Whether you’re thinking about full-time translation, part-time interpreting, academia, or other language-related roles—this is a great chance to hear real stories and ask practical questions.

This event is specifically designed for students and recent graduates who are exploring a career in the field. It is not intended for current or established practitioners.

When registering, you will have the opportunity to submit any questions you have for our guest speakers.

Our Guest Speakers

Wenyue Ouyang

Ying Dong

Wenyue is a NAATI Certified Translator (Chinese and English) with seven years of professional experience across game localisation, medical, legal, and business translation. She holds a Master of Translation and Interpreting from UNSW, a Graduate Certificate in Intercultural and Applied Linguistics from the University of Sydney, and is currently pursuing a Master of Speech Pathology at Griffith University.

Wenyue is a member of AUSIT and an Expert Member of the Translators Association of China. She has collaborated with major clients across the private and public sectors, delivering high-quality translation in both technical and creative contexts.

In addition to her professional work, Wenyue has served as a mentor in the UNSW Employability Program over the past three years, supporting students interested in pursuing careers in translation and interpreting. She is also leading the establishment of AUSIT’s Chinese Language Division, with a focus on community building and professional development.

Ying is a freelance Mandarin-English interpreter and currently works as a part-time Associate Lecturer and Research Assistant at UNSW. She completed her Master’s in Translation and Interpreting one and a half years ago and now takes on occasional interpreting work, mainly in legal settings.

Alongside this, her main role is supporting international students in developing their communication skills and confidence through self-directed learning, while also researching student wellbeing at the university.

Although interpreting is a small part of her workload, Ying values staying connected to the profession — it motivates her to keep growing as a communicator, keep learning beyond the classroom, and stay open to future career possibilities.

As an early career professional, Ying is actively shaping her path by exploring different roles. She sees every experience as valuable and believes that growth doesn’t come from having all the answers, but from staying curious, open, and committed to investing in herself.
